Amending current constitution preferable to adopting new one –head of constitutional court
YEREVAN, May 21. /ARKA/. Evolution that implies amending the existing constitution is much more preferable compared to the revolutionary path where a new one is to be adopted, chairman of Armenia’s constitutional court Gagik Harutiunyan said at a public discussion on preliminary concept of constitutional reforms in Armenia.
Adoption of a new constitution would be required in a completely different economic situation than the one we have today, Harutiunyan said.
The head of the constitutional court also said some fundamental articles in the constitution ensure its stability and no amendment should conflict with them.
The discussion was held supported by OSCE Yerevan Office and USAID-implemented Armenian parliament support project.
Under a presidential decree of September 4 2013, a professional commission was set up to deal with the constitutional reform in Armenia and submit a concept for the reform by July 1, 2014. –0--
