YEREVAN, January 20. / ARKA /. About 32,000 tons of poultry meat is imported to Armenia annually, according to Ashot Hovhannisyan, head of the agricultural ministry’s veterinary department.
"Domestically we produce about 8000 tons of poultry meat a year, while the demand is above 40,000 tons. In fact, every year we have to import some 32,000 tons of poultry meat, “he said to a news conference today.
Hovhannisyan blamed the low production of poultry meat on shortage of feed and feed additives, in particular maize, more than 80 % of which is imported from other countries.
According to him, given sufficient amount of feed, the largest poultry farms –Arax, Lusakert and Shahumyan - can double production.
The bulk of poultry meat is brought to Armenia from Brazil, Argentina, Canada and the United States. .-0-
