YEREVAN, December 4. / ARKA /. Armenia’s wheat output this year has amounted to 306,000 metric tons, up from 243,000 metric tons in 2012, according to a deputy minister of agriculture Garnik Petrosyan.
Speaking at a news conference, Petrosyan said per hectare yield has also risen from 26 quintals in 2012 to about 31 quintals.
The deputy minister attributed the growth to ‘successful implementation’ of a government-designed program to boost high quality wheat seed production.
Earlier, minister Sergo Karapetyan reported that the government earmarked 550 million drams for purchase of 3.3 tons of super elite wheat seeds from Russia in 2014.
According to the National Statistical Service of Armenia, the annual consumption of grain in the country is 650,000-720,000 tons, of which about 440,000 tons are for food needs. The deficit is replenished by imports. ($ 1 - 403.91 drams). 0-
