YEREVAN, September 9. / ARKA /. Armenia’s food self-sufficiency level is about 60 % this year, according to Hrachya Tspnetsyan, head of an agriculture ministry department, who told a news conference today that food safety is a critical component of the national security.
He said the most problematic areas of agriculture in this context are production of grains, poultry and pork.
He said self-sufficiency in wheat production is only 35-36 %, that of poultry production is even less - 12-20 %, while that of pork production is 41 %. According to him, the self-sufficiency level for potatoes, melons, fruits, grape, mutton and goat meat, beef and egg production is quite high. The same is true regarding production of milk and dairy products.
Tspnetsyan said the strategy of the ministry of agriculture, calling for about 60 various measures, is to improve these indicators by increasing production.
Ashot Hovhanisian, head of a ministry department overseeing husbandry and veterinary, said introduction of modern technology may help improve food security of the country noticeably. He said the government plan is to raise food self-sufficiency to 80-85 % by 2020. -0-
