Armenia’s government to support frost-affected farms
YEREVAN, April 4. /ARKA/. Armenian government will provide support to farms affected by the recent frosts, Armenia’s premier Tigran Sargsyan said Thursday.
Gusty winds and a temperature drop of 10-12 degrees accompanied the Sunday March 30 heavy snowfall across Armenia. The snow cover was as thick as about 30-40 centimeters in Yerevan. The unfavorable weather conditions led to electricity failures. The cold spell damaged about 80-90% of apricot crops. According to preliminary estimates, the damage to apricot trees only may reach $25 million.
A total of 11,500 hectares are affected, the premier said. The minister of agriculture, together with his colleagues from provinces, is currently making precise assessments of the damage to provide targeted support, he said. The studies will be completed within two days.
The government will also provide extra seeds and fertilizers to farmers. The government applied to the Central Bank to discuss financial problems farmers have encountered.
Re-crediting mechanisms will be used this year, like the ones used last year to support farmers in Armavir region, the premier said. –0--
