YEREVAN, December 18. /ARKA/. The mayor of Yerevan Taron Margaryan lighted up the country’s main Christmas tree at the Republican Square in Yerevan Tuesday.
At the same time, Christmas trees were lighted up in all administrative districts of the capital.
A concert of Armenia’s pop stars was held at the square after the official ceremony.
“We have decided to start New Year events earlier this year to create a festive atmosphere for residents of Yerevan and the guests”, the mayor told reporters.
Some 40 million drams (almost $100,000) is earmarked for New Year and Christmas events and the appearance of the capital under the municipal budget, Margaryan said.
Markaryan said the Christmas tree has been decorated taking into account wishes of the residents that were collected in special boxes in the mayor’s office.
The mayor urged all residents of Yerevan and guests to take active part in festivities to last till January 13.
The height of the main Christmas tree from 6,000 branches is 32 meters. Over 38,000 LED Christmas tree lights and 500 toys were used for decoration of the tree. –0—
