Armenian exports to Russia nearly double in four months

Armenian exports to the Russian Federation in the first four months of 2016 nearly doubled (growing by 95.8%) year-on-year to $97.4 million, according to the latest numbers, released today by the National Statistical Service (NSS).

YEREVAN, June 1. /ARKA/. Armenian exports to the Russian Federation in the first four months of 2016 nearly doubled (growing by 95.8%) year-on-year to $97.4 million, according to the latest numbers, released today by the National Statistical Service (NSS). Russian imports to Armenia during the reporting period declined by 1.2% to $302.2 million, NSS said.

The rise in exports to the Russian Federation compares to an 18% drop in Armenian exports to that country in 2015, caused largely by a dramatic devaluation of the Russian ruble by more than 50%.

Armenia’s trade with Russia in January-April 2016 as opposed to the same period of time last year  increased by 12.4% to about $399.6 million, making  27.4% of the country’s overall foreign trade.

According to NSS data, Armenia's foreign trade with CIS countries in the same time span totaled $450.4 million, an increase of 8.1% making made 30.9% of Armenia’s total foreign trade. Incidentally, Armenian exports to Ukraine also increased by 38.8% to $2.4 million, while imports to Belarus nearly tripled to $2.24 million.

Armenia’s trade with the European Union declined by 0.1% to $355.2 million (24.4% of the total trade), while trade with other countries increased by 4.2% to $652 million (44.7% of the total trade).

Armenia’s overall foreign trade in January-April 2016 amounted to about $1.457.6 billion, an increase of 4.2% compared to the same period of 2015. 

According to official data, Armenian exports in the first four months of the year amounted to approximately $514.5 million, an increase of 22.2% compared to January-April 2015, while imports  fell by 3.5% to about  $943.2 million.  As a result, the negative trade deficit decreased to $428.7 million from $556.2 million in January-April 2015.
