Armenian government is looking into chances to have gas price reduced
YEREVAN, October 10. /ARKA/. Armenia’s new Minister of Energy Infrastructures and Natural Resources Garegin Baghramyan, appointed to the post on October 8, said today that government continues the search for options to have the price of Russian natural gas cut.

Speaking to reporters ahead of a Cabinet session he said a prime minister-set up task force headed by the vice-premier is looking into how the price of natural gas is formed. He said the chance to achieve this goal will be more evident when the study is over and when expectations, forecasts at the exchange rate of USD are available.

The previous minister Artur Grigoryan said earlier the government would do its utmost to have the price of natural gas delivered from Russia reduced.

Under a 2016 Armenian- Russia agreement, Russian Gazprom sells one thousand cubic meters of gas to its Armenian subsidiary Gazprom Armenia at $150. Gazprom Armenia that owns and runs the country’s natural gas distribution network, sells it to households at about $300 per one thousand cubic meters

According to the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, in 2017 deliveries of Russian natural gas to Armenia increased by 7%  to 1 billion and 996 million cubic meters and deliveries of natural gas from Iran grew  by 2.9% to 382 million and 700 thousand cubic meters. The total gas consumption in Armenia in 2017 increased by 5.3%.

As part of gas for electricity swap deal Armenia receives about 370 million cubic meters of gas a year from Iran, which is converted into electricity and is shipped back to Iran. Earlier it was reported that Iran would triple its gas exports to Armenia by 2019 and will also sell gas to Georgia through Armenia. In particular, Tehran was said to plan to increase natural gas exports to Armenia from 1 million cubic meters of gas per day to 3 million cubic meters. -0-
