YEREVAN, December 5. /ARKA/. Armenian Deputy Agriculture Minister Garnik Petrosyan told journalists today that the ministry has managed to lessen the damage inflicted to crops in Ararat Valley by the potato tuber moth, an insect pest, to minimum this year.
In 2012, the potato tuber moth badly affected crops in Ararat and Armavir provinces.
“This year our ministry, in cooperation with farmers, has done whatever necessary in Ararat Valley to minimize damage from potato tuber moth,” the deputy minister said.
Farmers should refrain from planting crops on the areas already affected by this moth, he said, they should also plant seedlings deep into the ground and use appropriate chemical pesticides in time.
“But they should remember that application of only one method produces no desirable effect – a complex approach is needed to achieve the goal,” he added answering ARKA News Agency’s question.
The agriculture ministry says potato crops in Armenia may total 658,000 tons this year against 647,000 in 2012. ---0---
