Exact frost damage to be clear in next days – ministry of agriculture
YEREVAN, April 2. /ARKA/. The exact amount of damage to agriculture from the recent frosts in Armenia will be clear in the next days, Armenia’s minister of agriculture Sergo Karapetyan said after his visit to Ararat province.
Karapetyan visited the Ararat region together with the minister of territorial administration and vice-premier Armen Gevorgyan and deputy minister of emergencies Haykar Mkhitaryan.
Karapetyan said the ministry of agriculture is currently taking measures to mitigate the cold spell effects.
In particular, the ministry is cooperating with import companies to supply good-quality seeds of vegetables and melons to farms, according to the report. Seeds of spring oats and other fodders have been also imported, says the report.
The minister stressed the importance of increasing the area under crops. The ministry is ready to provide extra fertilizers and fuel at affordable prices if needed, he said.
According to preliminary estimates by the head of Armenia’s agrarian union Hrach Berberyan, about 80-90% of apricot crop was affected by the frosts, and the damage may reach $25 million. –0--
