YEREVAN, September 20. / ARKA /. The Armenian government decided today to transfer 171 million drams to ArmRosGazprom (ARG), the Russian-dominated Armenia's national gas distribution company, to pay part of natural gas bills of socially vulnerable families for the second quarter of 2012.
Under an agreement with the ARG, from April 1, 2011 low-income families have been receiving special coupons entitling them to pay 100 drams per cubic meter of gas given that a family uses less than 300 cubic meters of gas a month. Other households pay 132 drams. Energy and natural resources minister Armen Movsisyan said today about 70 thousand families benefited from the discount.
The government has already transferred 620 million drams to ARG to pay the gas bills of low-income families. The discount was to end on April 1, 2012, but the government extended it until March 31, 2013.
The measure was proposed by President Serzh Sargsyan and approved by ARG management. Sargsyan promised such a discount following his February 25, 2011 meeting in Saint Petersburg with Russia’s president Dmitry Medvedev. -0-
