Iranian gas supplies disadvantageous to Armenia: ministry of energy

YEREVAN, December 5. /ARKA/. Iranian gas supplies to Armenia makes no economic sense as they will cost much more than the Russian gas, Armenia’s minister of energy Armen Movsisyan said at government hour in the parliament Wednesday, in commenting the statement of the Iranian ambassador about Iran’s willingness to supply gas to Armenia.

The minister said Iran is ready to meet Armenia’s domestic demand, but is going to sell its gas to Armenia at international prices, i.e. more than $400 per 1,000 cubic meters, wich is much higher than the price for Russian gas.

Following the negotiations of the presidents Sargsyan and Putin, Armenia and Russia signed a number of documents in gas sector envisaging, in particular, increasing Gasprom’s share in ArmRosgasprom to 100% and reducing the gas price for Armenia to 189 dollars per 1,000 cubic meters as compared to 270 dollars before.

Apart from this, Gasprom Export ojsc and ArmRosgasprom signed a contract obliging the Russian gas holding to supply up to 2.5 billion cubic meters of gas to Armenia every year; the price will be defined by the Russian gas pricing formula. ($1=404.98drams). –0—
