YEREVAN, September 9. /ARKA/. Iranian, Russian and Chinese companies are interested in construction of the Armenian section of Armenia-Iran railway, secretary of Armenian National Security Council Artur Baghdasaryan told reporters Friday.
“The Iranian side has already expressed its readiness to fund the construction of the railway on its territory”, Baghdasaryan said.
Now efforts are made to find additional funds for building the railway on the Armenian territory, and various Iranian, Russian and Chinese companies show interest in it, he said.
Development of rail transport is of strategic importance to Armenia, and construction of Iran-Armenia railway is ambitious, still important state-supported program.
Baghdasaryan said Iran is currently building modern rail infrastructures linking the country to India, China, and Middle Asia, which means getting connected to Iran will provide a broad diversification.
The North-South (Iran-Armenia) railroad will grant Armenia an alternate way for energy supplies.
According to experts, from 1.7 to 2.8 billion dollars are required for implementation of the project.
The construction is currently discussed with Russia, Iran and China. The World Bank and Asian Development Bank have shown their interest to the project.–0—
