Mining companies should explain to local people prospects of their activities and impact on residents, minister

YEREVAN, March 25. / ARKA /. Before launching its operation in Armenia a mining company should explain to local residents the prospects of its activities and its impact on the population, energy and natural resources minister Armen Movsisyan said today.

He added that two years before closing the mine the company should develop a closure plan that should explain how it is going to recover land reserves, manage the tailings and assess the impact of mine closure on the local labor force.

According to Movsisyan, the government on its part should monitor the recovery of used sites by using reclamation payments made by companies during their operation.

The minister said there are more than 850 mineral deposits with established reserves in the country, including 37 metal deposits. He said 400 mines are being developed by 474 companies.

According to the National Statistical Service, Armenia’s mining industry in 2013 amounted to 196.6 billion drams, having increased by 8% from the previous year. Production of metal ores amounted to 191.3 billion. -0-
