YEREVAN, September 11. /ARKA/. Armenia's Russian-controlled natural gas operator ArmRosGazprom (ARG) said Tuesday a new underground gas storage tank will be put into operation by the end of the year.
"By the end of the year a new storage tank will be added to already 18 operating in the Abovyan underground gas storage facility. The new reservoir is being now filled with gas. Along with this we are building also another reservoir to increase the volume of natural gas. It is expected to come online in 2-3 years,’ the company said.
The company said also the main focus of the expansion, rehabilitation and modernization program is on the safe and reliable operation of the facility .
ArmRosGazprom (ARG), a joint venture with Russian Gazprom, has been increasing its underground storage capacities since 2006. The Abovian gas storage is one of the principal elements of Armenia’s gas transmission system ensuing the country’s energy security. It was constructed in 1962 on rock salt deposits at a depth of 800-1,000 meters. The gas storage regulates also the seasonal gas consumption by Armenia’s industrial sector and supplies gas to the country’s most important gas consumers.
ARG is the only company dealing with import and distribution of Russian natural gas coming to Armenia from Russia via Georgia. It was established in 1997. Russian Gazprom 80 percent in it, the rest is owned by Armenian government. -0-
