Newspaper: Armenia’s unemployment rate drops to 16% due to migration growth

YEREVAN, January 18. /ARKA/. Armenia’s unemployment rate dropped to 16% due to migration growth, Orakarg (Agenda) newspaper reports.

“Some 135,000 people left the country over the last three years, whereas economic growth rates increased by 7.1% in 2012, as compared to 4.7% in 2011.. Armenia continues emptying. Last year the negative migration balance was 42,764 people”, the newspaper says.

Compared to 2011, 1,000 less people left the country in 2012, but about 6,000 Syrian Armenians found refuge in Armenia after the Syrian events.
“Hence, more people left Armenia in 2012, than in 2011”, the newspaper concludes.

Over the last ten years, an average of 20-25,000 people migrates from the country every year. Some 46,700 people migrated from Armenia in 2010. -0-
