YEREVAN, January 23. / ARKA /. The Armenian government has not yet taken any decision on the demolition of the old building of Armenia’s international Zvartnots airport, Mkrtich Minasyan, chairman of the Union of Architects of Armenia, said at a press conference on Thursday. He said the government proposed to discuss this issue.
‘We need to find the best option to save the airport building, which is one of the best samples of the Soviet modernism," said Minasyan .
In comments on a statement by the chief of the Armenian Civil Aviation Department, Artyom Movsesian that the old building will be demolished Minasyan noted that " it is his desire only because the building can be demolished only by a government decision. As far as I know it is still looking into this issue,» he stressed.
Last April Armenia International Airports, granted a 30-year concession agreement for the management of operations at the airport, asked the government for permission to demolish the old building of the airport. The news caused public outcry. Many civil organizations and architects rejected the idea, arguing that the aging and dilapidated building is a historically and artistically significant “monument” that should be preserved.
The old airport building was inaugurated in 1980. The airport is located 12 km west of Yerevan.
According to experts, the old airport building is physically worn out, and its reconstruction will require up to $120 million.
Late last December the Armenian government approved a master plan for Yerevan’s Zvartnots International Airport for the 2013-2017 period that calls for $102 million of investment into the improvement and further modernization of the facility and the construction of a new building.
Armenia - International Airports iss owned by Argentine company Corporation America, which is in turn owned by Armenian-Argentine businessman Eduardo Eurnekian. -0-
