Russian companies to invest in Armenian Meghri free trade zone

YEREVAN, October 9. /ARKA/. The Russian Export Center jsc signed a number of agreements on the margins of the II Eurasian Partnership forum in Yerevan last Friday, envisaging the participation of Russian companies in the Armenian free trade zone in the southern Meghri on the border with Iran, in the development of cooperation in the field of communications and agriculture. In an exclusive interview with ARKA news agency the head of Russian Export Center Pyotr Fradkov spoke about the signed agreements.

ARKA - A number of agreements were signed on the sidelines of the forum. What do they suggest and what steps will be implemented?

Fradkov – The Russian Export Center is responsible for cooperation in the field of mutual deliveries of goods and services with high added value. We are interested in developing and continuing cooperation. In particular, a Memorandum of Cooperation was signed between the Russian Export Center joint-stock company and Soglasie joint-stock company as part of the promotion of economic projects. In addition, we signed an agreement on cooperation between the Russian Export Center and the Jurisdiction of Armenia Foundation in the field of information and communication technologies, within the framework of which we intend to jointly promote Russian-Armenian economic projects both in other member states of the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) and in third countries in the field of information and communication technologies. A cooperation agreement was also signed between the Russian Export Center and Armenian SME Investments, which is aimed at implementation of joint projects in agriculture, delivery of municipal and road-building machinery of Russian production, as well as agro-processing and extractive technologies.

ARKA - Can you provide details regarding participation of Russian companies in the Armenian free trade zone? What programs are planned to be implemented there and what investments are planned to be attracted?

Fradkov - As part of the memorandum signed with the President of the Eurasian Partnership forum Ara Abrahamyan, we plan to create the necessary infrastructure in the free economic zone on the border with Iran to promote cross-border export operations with third countries by enjoying preferential trade regimes. It is interesting to us to take part in the work of this trade zone, because here we see the potential not only for  bilateral cooperation between Russia and Armenia, but also for multilateral, including the potential for entering the Iranian market. We want to use the opportunities provided by the trade zone.

ARKA - What spheres will affect this cooperation and what exactly is planned to create in the free trade zone?

Fradkov - We will discuss this further, since we are only talking about intentions, but this is important, because they need to be worked out. Most importantly, we have already announced our intention to work in this zone. At the same time, the plans will include the construction of a trading house, as well as production of goods and equipment that can be sold not only to Iran, but to other countries of the Persian Gulf.

ARKA - How much is to be invested in the creation of infrastructures and which parties will implement the project?

Fradkov - We will provide financing for these projects. Our task now is to provide the appropriate financial product and resource, and we will do it. I think that within a couple of months we will come up with specific parameters for the supplies that are required. As for the companies, at least 10 Russian companies, which produce various types of municipal equipment, will participate in the trade zone. -0-
