YEREVAN, August 23. / ARKA /. Armenian military investigators said today they have accomplished a through study of a video of a deadly shootout that occurred near the villa of former governor of southern province of Synuik Suren Khachatryan on June 1. The video captured by security cameras installed on the former governor’s house was confiscated by the police hours after the incident.
The incident occurred in Goris, a town in Syunik province. As a result Artak Budaghyan, commander of a military unit and his brother Avetik, a local businessman, clashed with relatives and bodyguards of then governor Suren Khachatryan. Avetik Budaghyan was shot dead, his brother Artak was wounded. One of governor’s bodyguards and his son Tigran were arrested several days later on charges of murder and illegal arms possession .
Both are accused of committing a murder, illegal purchase, sale, storage, transportation and carrying of weapons and intention to inflict bodily or other grievous injuries to another person. The criminal case is being handled by military investigators.
According to media reports, the shootout occurred hours after a dinner given by the former governor for several regional dignitaries, including the Budaghyan brothers. The governor reportedly argued with Avetik Budaghian during that party.
According to the formal indictment, Artak Budaghian rushed to Khachatryan’s villa and threatened to kill its residents after being told that his brother was beaten up in the governor’s car. Colonel Artak Budaghian was formally charged with assault, but was not taken into custody.
According to experts, video was not edited and all the footage corresponds to reality. After getting acquainted with the results of the study Artak Budaghyan refused to testify and have a confrontation with the bodyguard and witnesses Karine Harutyunyan, Larissa Barsegyan and Angelina Kayan. On Friday, Artak Badaghyan was again summoned to questioning. -0-
