Melting snow poses no flooding threat – emergency ministry

YEREVAN, April 1. / ARKA /. Armenia’s ministry of emergency situations said today the rapid melting of snow is not going to translate into flooding.

Hovhannes Khangeldyan, head of the ministry’s Center for Crisis Management, said there was no indication that the fast snowmelt would cause flooding.

He said night temperatures will stay below zero for several days although at daytime they may rise by 8-10 degrees.

On March 30 an unprecedented spring snowfall with freezing temperatures blocked some Armenian highways.

The snow layer in Yerevan was 30-40 cm high. The calamity hit hard the country’s agriculture killing early blossoms on farmers’ orchards. -0-
