YEREVAN, May 15. /ARKA/. Armenia decommissioned and dismantled 21 armored combat vehicles in accordance with the requirements of the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE ). Armenian Ministry of Defense said a multinational inspection team from Germany led by Brigadier General Braunstein confirmed on May 14 that the dismantling complied with the requirements of the CFE Treaty.

The Defense Ministry said the vehicles had been decommissioned, but were to be disposed of in accordance with the CFE Treaty procedures. The resulting scrap metal is to be sold, and the proceeds will be used for financing a mine risk warning and control program.

The German Embassy in Armenia, on behalf of the German government, congratulated Armenia on the effective dismantling of the 21st unit of military equipment, according to the embassy’s Facebook page. The work was done with the financial support from Germany (according to media reports, about 1 million euros were allocated for these purposes).

In December 2017, the Armenian parliament ratified an agreement with NATO on technical support and supply, providing for the demilitarization and dismantling of the unusable 140 weapons and 21 units of armored combat vehicles.

The cooperation between Armenia and NATO is based on the Armenia-NATO Individual Partnership Action Plan (IPAP), which was signed in December 2005. Armenia’s participation in IPAP involves periodic consultations with NATO on regional security, development of security strategy, Armenia’s military doctrine, improvement of the defense and budget planning process, and other issues. -0---
