YEREVAN, March 26. / ARKA /. The events in Ukraine and around the referendum in Crimea may push several former Soviet republics to revive the GUAM (Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldova) organization, according to Boris Navasardayn, the chairman of the Yerevan Press Club.
According to him, it is not accidental that Azerbaijani politicians and experts are increasingly talking about the importance of reviving the GUAM.
"The Ukrainian events , the referendum in the Crimea, Armenia's joining the Customs Union are the reasons why GUAM is very likely to be revived , which in my opinion is very dangerous to Armenia, " said Navasardyan at a press conference on Wednesday.
He also added that by clearly expressing its position on the Crimea Armenia has placed itself before serious challenges, in particular the rupture of diplomatic relations with Ukraine
Navasardyan said that GUAM was viewed as a way of countering the Russian influence and as part of a strategy backed by the United States and also had some anti-Armenian elements, since three of its four members had the problem of unrecognized republics and viewed Armenia as a regional opponent.
He said GUAM failed due to some European programs which made Armenia a more interesting partner for Europe and three other GUAM members except for Azerbaijan. -0-
