Former sports minister appointed Armenian ambassador to Georgia

YEREVAN, June 24. / ARKA /.  Armenian president Serzh Sargsyan has appointed former sports minister Yuri Vardanyan as ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary to Georgia with residence in Tbilisi, Sargsyan’s press office reported.

Yuri Vardanyan was born in 1956 in Leninakan (now Gyumri). In 1980 he graduated from the Faculty of Physical Education of Leninakan Pedagogical Institute.

Vardanyan is a multiple weightlifting champion of the USSR, 9 time world champion, 8 time Europe champion, Olympic champion, having set a total of 43 world records.

From 1991 to 2009 he lived in the USA. In 2013 May Vardanyan was appointed minister of sport and youth affairs. He left office earlier this year after the resignation of the previous government. He is married and has three sons.-0-
