YEREVAN, October 10/ARKA/. Ara Abrahamyan, a Russia-based wealthy businessman of Armenian origin, who is also chairman of the Union of Armenians of Russia, welcomed President Serzh Sargsyan’s announcement that Armenia will join the Russia-led Customs Union.
Speaking at a news conference in Yerevan today he commended president Sargsyan for these decisions, but stressed that in the accession process Armenia must be guided in the first place by its own interests and agree to the proposed conditions only if they meet its interests.
Abrahamyan downplayed arguments that the decision was hasty, saying this issue had been discussed and debated over the last few years.
Before president Sargsyan’s announcement Armenia was supposed to initial an association agreement with the European Union at an Eastern Partnership summit in Vilnius, Lithuania, in late November. -0-
