YEREVAN, September 27. / ARKA /. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan called on the international community today to contain Turkey.
"I call on all OSCE Minsk Group co-chairing countries and the international community to pay serious attention to the situation. Unleashing a large-scale war in the South Caucasus, on the verge of which we are now standing, can have the most unforeseen consequences. It can go beyond the region and acquire a much larger scale, threatening international security and stability. I call on the international community to use all levers of influence to keep Turkey from all possible forms of interference, which will finally destabilize the situation," he said.
Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan announced on Sunday his support for Azerbaijan in the conflict with Armenia, saying that as always, Turkey with all its capabilities is next to its Azerbaijani brothers.
Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar said the hostilities could end “throwing the region into fire,” while promising Ankara’s backing to Baku.
Pashinyan stated that Turkey's aggressive behavior was extremely dangerous during the fierce fighting on Armenia-Azerbaijani border in Tavush last July and has continued into today.
"The continuation of such a dangerous model of Turkey's behavior is fraught with the most destructive consequences for the South Caucasus and neighboring regions. The international community must jointly stop dangerous developments and protect the region from all attempts of destabilization," he said.
Azerbaijan launched today morning a large-scale offensive shelling Nagorno-Karabakh’s capital Stepanakert and other settlements. “The Defense Army of Nagorno-Karabakh is successfully repelling the attack,” Armenian Prime Minister Pashinyan wrote in a Facebook post.
“The enemy has launched an air and missile attack in the direction of Nagorno-Karabakh,” said Shushan Stepanyan, Armenian Ministry of Defense spokeswoman.
Later in the day Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan declared martial law and general military mobilization after holding emergency meetings of his government and Security Council. According to the Armenian Defense Ministry, thousands of people across Armenia have already volunteered to fight in Karabakh. -0-
