The number of Armenians supporting close integration with Europe decreasing, polls results suggest

YEREVAN, November 14. /ARKA/. A string of public opinion polls conducted by the Yerevan-based Sociometer polling center across Armenia in 2012-2016 showed that the number of Armenian citizens supporting its close integration with Europe and the United States decreased, the head of the polling center Aharon Adibekyan said at a press conference on Tuesday.

"Previously, some 23% of Armenian citizens used to back Armenia’s close relationships with Europe and the United States. In recent years their number has decreased to 20%," Adibekyan said, citing the results of public opinion polls.

According to him,  65% of the population support the government’s pro-Russian course, however, some  24% of them can not clearly answer why they are in favor of an alliance with Russia. Adibekyan also noted  that 11% of the population in Armenia are undecided.

Armenia and the European Union are supposed to  sign the Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement at an EU- sponsored Eastern Partnership summit in Brussels on 24 November. The agreement was initialed on March 21, 2017, by Armenia and the European Union. Before the signing the agreement must be approved by all 28 EU member countries. The agreement will enter into force after all 28 EU member states and Armenia ratify it.

Armenia and the EU were supposed to sign the Association Agreement and the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement (DCFTA) at a 2013 November Eastern Partnership summit in Vilnius but on September 3 Armenian president Serzh Sargsyan announced that the country was going to become part of the Russian-led Customs Union.

On December 7, 2015 Armenia and the EU launched talks on a new framework agreement after EU Foreign Affairs Council authorized earlier the European Commission and the High Representative to open negotiations on a new legal basis for relations with Armenia on October 13. -0-
