YEREVAN, December 18. / ARKA /. For the United States it is important to develop cooperation with Armenia in the area of defense, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Russia / Ukraine / Eurasia, Dr. Evelyn Farkas said today during a meeting with Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian in Yerevan, the foreign ministry reported.
It quoted Nalbandian as saying that the Armenian -American partnership in various fields, including in the area of defense and security, has been developing in recent years. The minister also spoke on arms control, in particular, on modernization of the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE ) stressing its importance in terms of preservation of peace in the region.
Nalbandian also spoke about Armenia’s involvement in various international efforts to combat terrorism, proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.
At the request of Dr. Evelyn Farkas, Nalbandian spoke about the latest developments in the settlement of the Karabakh conflict. During the meeting they also spoke on Armenia's participation in international peacekeeping activities in Afghanistan and Kosovo and Armenia – NATO interaction.
Dr. Evelyn Farkas, is in Armenia for a series of bilateral defense consultations from December 18 to 19. -0-
