YEREVAN, February 11. /ARKA/. About 250 people have signed a petition requesting to stop demolition of the old building of Zvartnots airport in Yerevan and maintain the initial design in reconstruction.
In April the concessionaire of Zvartnots airport, “Armenia – International Airports” company applied to Yerevan Mayor’s Office for a permission to demolish the old building of the airport, which, according to expert estimates, is worn-out and its reconstruction will require investments of some $15-20 million.
The topic has been widely discussed in social networks, on TV, as well as at meetings of urban planning, aviation, historical and cultural values subcommittees and other agencies.
At its meeting of 26 December, 2013, Armenia’s government approved the master plan for 2013-2017 submitted by “Armenia – International Airports” company and envisaging investments worth a total of $102 million for improvements and construction of a new building in the airport.
In January head of Union of Architects of Armenia Mkrtich Minasyan said the government has not made its mind up about demolition yet.
“Zvartnots is a historical and architectural monument of the 20th century and is a unique building, which should be preserved if we want consider ourselves a cultural nation and nor warriors”, says the petition addressed to the country’s premier Tigran Sargsyan.
The text of the petition is posted on change.org website.
