About 366,000 trout fry released into Sevan in 2012

YEREVAN, December 27. /ARKA/. About 366 thousands of trout fry were released into Sevan Lake during 2012, Armenian minister of nature protection Aram Harutiunyan told journalists Wednesday. This included 200,000 summer trout fry and about 166,000 gegharkuni (sort of Sevan trout).

The interference was required because natural reproduction was not sufficient to maintain fish population, the minister said.

Harutiunyan also pointed out that 59.9 million drams were spent from the budget to increase endemic fish population of the lake.

The Minister expressed hopes that natural reproduction process will become more active eventually.

Fish stocks have reduced in Lake Sevan by 3.5 times over the last twenty years. In the beginning of 1990ies fish stocks totaled 28-30 tons, as compared to 8.5 tons at the end of 2011.

Due to unrestricted private fishing, especially during the spawn, fish stocks, sig, trout and beglu in particular, keep dropping in Sevan.

Lake Sevan is one of the largest mountainous lakes of Europe and Asia. It is situated in the center of Armenian plateau, 1,914 meters above the sea level. The lake is the main source of drinking water in the region. ($1=403.90drams).-0-
