YEREVAN, May 16. / ARKA /. Armenia’s National Assembly is discussing a bill designed to extend compulsory free education from 9 to 12 years.
Speaking at an extraordinary session education and science minister Armen Ashotyan said the proposed changes are prompted by the need to introduce a competitive education system.
"Every year 3-5 thousand teens are doomed to poverty because of lack of vocational or technical education. Extension of compulsory education will resolve this problem. In addition, children from socially disadvantaged families will get access to specialized secondary education and will learn a profession," he stressed.
The minister said 92 percent of children are covered by general education and 83 percent continue education at colleges and high schools. -0-
