Armenia to start producing radioactive isotopes for medicine in November
YEREVAN, July 14. /ARKA/. Armenia will start local production of radioactive isotopes for diagnosing and treating harsh diseases, the official magazine of the Joint Institute of Nuclear Research says referring to Armenia’s representative Samvel Harutiunyan.
A cyclotron has been obtained and its operations will start in November for production of radionuclides for nuclear medicine purposes. Armenia will become a country able to manufacture, use and sell radionuclides in the region, Harutiunyan said as cited by the magazine, Novosti Armenia reported referring to RIA Novosti.
Apart from this, the center will be conducting fundamental research, according to the report. Academician Yury Hovhannesyan who heads the nuclear reactions laboratory after Flerov at the institute will be the chief consultant to the project.
Armenia’s government made a decision to set up a center of nuclear medicine and oncology on the basis of the Yerevan Physics Institute in 2009. Belgian Global Medical Solutions is the managing company for the center.
The center will consist of three high-tech departments – laboratory equipped with cyclotron for radioisotope synthesis, diagnostics center with facilities for early diagnosis and the clinics where patients will be treated by radioisotopes. –0—
