Armenian court sentences political analyst to 10 years in prison

YEREVAN, December 13. / ARKA /. A court in Yerevan has sentenced today a political analyst Arkady Vardanyan to 10 years in prison for plotting a murder.

Arkady Vardanyan and Arsen Avetyan had been arrested last May by Armenia’s National Security Services on charges of plotting to kill Arsen Avetyan’s father Robert.

Arsen Avetyan was sentenced today to 11 years in prison. Another defendant, Varuzhan Savtalyan, was given a 4 year prison term.

Arkady Vardanyan was a Russia-based businessman. In 2000 he organized a string of anti-government prtests in Armenia and an unauthorized march, for which he was put under administrative arrest.

In 2013, Vardanyan supported the leader of Heritage party Raffi Hovannisian, who refused to recognize the results of the presidential election on February 18, won by incumbent president Serzh Sargsyan.  -0-
