YEREVAN, September 11. / ARKA /. Head of an Armenian consumer education and advocacy organization argued today that creation of a special commission will help ward off unjustified price hikes of essentials.
Speaking at a news conference, Babken Pipoyan, chairman of the organization called Informed and Protected Consumer, said the failure to do so will put Armenians before a ‘very serious problem.
According to him, the proposed commission must include representatives from several government agencies, including the State Food Safety Service and the State Commission for Protection of Economic Competition.
Pipoyan also emphasized the role of the public in stepping up control over food and non-food products prices by signaling violations and thus assisting the government in preventing abuses in this area.
Pipoyan also urged food examining laboratories to toughen their procedures which, in his opinion, will contribute to improving the competitiveness of domestic goods in foreign markets.
According to official data, the inflation in the first seven months grew by 4.7 percent from the year earlier. The government inflation projection for this year is 4± 1.5%. -0-
