YEREVAN, October 16. /ARKA/. An earthquake in Garni fault may destruct 20% of dwelling houses in Yerevan, Fumio Kaneko, an expert at Japan’s Agency for International Development, said presenting results of program “ Seismic risks evaluation and management in Armenia,” Novosti-Armenia reports.
The joint Japanese-Armenian program was implemented in 2010-2012 by Emergency Situation Ministry of Armenia and Japan’s Agency for International Development.
“While implementing this program, we researched Garni fault. It is active, and in case of an earthquake the intensity may be nearly 8 points,” Kaneko said.
According to him, in this case 20% of dwelling houses in Yerevan may be destructed resulting in 10-30 thousand victims.
Yerevan fault also presents some interest, but it is not explored.
On his side, a director of National Service of Seismic Protection at Armenia’s Emergency Situations Ministry Hrachya Petrosyan noted that such destructions and the number of victims may be caused as many dwelling houses of the capital do not meet seismic norms.
“This refers to buildings constructed before 1989, when evaluation of seismic threat to Yerevan was inaccurate. As a result, the constructed buildings have a seven-point earthquake-resistance,” Petrosyan said adding that earthquake-resistance should be nine points.
Currently such buildings are being enhanced and legislative base in this sphere is being improved, he said. -0-
