Former Armenian presidential candidature sentenced to 14 years behind bars
YEREVAN, September 23. / ARKA /. A first instance court in Yerevan has sentenced today a former presidential candidate, Vardan Sedrakian, to 14 years in prison, Novosti -Armenia reports, citing a judge assistant.
Vardan Sedrakian was charged with masterminding and ordering the killing of another former presidential candidate Paruyr Hayrikian, the leader of the National Self-Determination Union. Other defendants in the case, Samvel Harutyunyan and Khachatur Poghosyan were sentenced to 14 and 12 years respectively. The court also ruled not to consider a claim by Hayrikyan for financial recovery .
An attempt to kill Hayrikyan was made January 31. He received a gunshot wound in the shoulder area. Two men were arrested February 7 – Khachatur Poghosyan, who had been convicted previously for drug trafficking and Samvel Harutyunyan. Later, both pleaded guilty. The gun that was used to try to kill Hayrikian was found at Poghosyan’s house. It was also found that both had been recruited previously by Sedrakian to repair his house.
In March Sedrakian was charged under article "attempted assassination of a state, political or public figure" and was arrested. He did not acknowledge his guilt in masterminding and ordering the botched assassination attempt. -0-
