YEREVAN, December 26. / ARKA /. The Armenian government has approved today a procedure for providing Syrian Armenian refugees with housing in New Aleppo quarter in the town of Ashtarak, 20 km off Yerevan.
The project to build housing for Syrian Armenian refugees was started at the instruction of president Serzh Sargsyan in June.
On July 23 the government passed a special decision on building the New Aleppo quarter in Ashtarak. On July 23 its council of elders ruled to grant an area of 4.8 hectares for the construction of the quarter. A team of architects volunteered to design the quarter.
So far 550 families of Syrian Armenians have applied for housing in the quarter. The apartments will be provided on favorable terms - part of the cost will be covered by the government and the rest the refugee families.
The construction will be financed by public funds as well as donations from foreign countries and international organizations. The overall control has been assigned to a public organization called the Center for Coordination of Problems of Syrian Armenians. According to some estimates, the cost of the construction is approximately $20 million.
According to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), about 7000 Syrian Armenians have fund shelter here. According to the Armenian ministry of diaspora , they number is above 10,000. -0-
