More than half of Armenian pensioners are poor – prime minister

YEREVAN, March 19. / ARKA /. Of 550, 000 Armenian pensioners some 350, 000 are poor, Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan said at a cabinet session today.

"It's no secret that of 550,000 pensioners some 350,000 face the poverty problem. The government raised pensions by 15% on January 1. We sought to raise the pensions of those people who receive the lowest pension," Sargsyan said.

Labor and social affairs minister, Artem Asatryan, said before January 1 some 68,000 pensioners received a pension below the extreme poverty line of 21,350 drams. Some 230,000 people received pensions below lower poverty threshold and 333,000 people received pensions below the upper poverty line. He said the 2014 budget has earmarked 29 billion drams as retirement benefits. 

According to the minister, the increase in pensions has cut fivefold the number of pensioners with a pension below the threshold of extreme poverty from 68,000 to 12,800 people. 

The number of pensioners receiving pensions lower than the poverty threshold has fallen from 230,000 to 138,000 and the number of pensioners with pension below the upper poverty line has fallen from 330,000 to 292,000. ($ 1 - 415.16 drams). -0 –
