YEREVAN, August 12. /ARKA/. Armenian citizens are excessively positive about the reported drop in the number of confirmed cases of Covid-19, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said during an extraordinary government meeting on Wednesday.

"I would like to point out the work of the police during this period. Today, the number of citizens who are fined for not wearing  masks is growing daily, which means that our citizens are too positive about the reduction in the number of infections," he said.

The prime minister noted that if the situation is not correctly assessed, the country may again slide to the state it was in in July, when the peak in the number of infections was recorded.

“We see that in many countries the so-called second wave has begun, and there are also countries, which   have officially announced that they had defeated the coronavirus, but now are forced to return to the regimes of the strictest restrictions. We, having gone through this hell and having more than 800 deaths from coronavirus and 234 deaths for other reasons, have now a chance to find ourselves in a completely different situation in the autumn by overcoming  coronavirus, regardless of what happens in the rest of the world," Pashinyan said.

The prime minister said that only the constant wearing of masks is a way out of this situation, despite the increased capabilities of the healthcare system.

Despite the drop in the number of daily infections, the government decided today to extend the state of emergency until September 12. Earlier the government said secondary, vocational training, music and art schools, as well as kindergartens are scheduled to resume from September 15. Regarding higher educational institutions a decision on their reopening will be made later this month.

On May 4 the government lifted the ban on almost all types of economic activity and now all sectors of the Armenian economy are functioning, except international flights due to closed borders, but Deputy Prime Minister Tigran Avinyan said last week that the government planned to increase the number of charter flights to and from Armenia.

The government has also removed today the ban on foreigners entering Armenia allowing also public gatherings and family celebrations of not more than 40 people given the participants wear masks and keep social distance. So far Armenia has registered 40,794 confirmed coronavirus cases and 806 deaths. -0-
