YEREVAN, October 30. /ARKA/. Potato prices are high due to reduced area under potato, chairman of the Armenian Agrarian Peasant Union Hrach Berberyan told reporters Wednesday.
This fall potato prices are quite high compared to the last year, he said adding it is because the area under potato has reduced by 6,000 hectares.
The expert said total area under potato is approximately 30-31,000 hectares.
The area has been reduced as potato production increased in 2012 and part of the crops could not be sold and was used as forage last year, Berberyan said.
The expert reminded today potato price is 120 drams per kilo, almost twice as expensive as last year.
Berberyan expressed confidence there will be no potato deficit in the country this year.
No official potato production output data have been released yet, Berberyan said in responding ARKA’s question.
According to Armenia’s ministry of agriculture, potato production rose by 60-70,000 tons in 2012 compared to 2011. ArmStat reports there were 557,800 tons of potatoes produced in the country n 2011. ($1=405.76drams). -0-
