Poverty and unemployment Armenia’s key challenges: UN resident representative
YEREVAN, October 24. /ARKA/. Poverty and unemployment main challenges in Armenia, UN permanent representative in Armenia Bradley Buzetto told a press conference Thursday.
Having this in mind the UN Yerevan office has reviewed its activities and is now focusing on priorities of the government and the Armenian people, Buzetto said.
In particular, the office is taking measures to help the country create new jobs, he said. The UN is studying the best experience in fighting against poverty and unemployment in the world, invites experienced experts in various fields and suggests most acceptable solutions to these two key problems, the permanent representative said.
Apart from this, the office is trying to create more favorable conditions for small and medium-sized businesses in Armenia, Buzetto said in responding ARKA’s question.
Among other directions to focus on while assisting the country’s leadership Buzetto mentioned anti-corruption measures, environmental protection, helping orphanages and refugees from Syria.
According to ArmStat, unemployment was 16.2% in Armenia in the second quarter, a reduction of 1.2 percentage points against the same period of the year before.
Armenia’s prime-minister Tigran Sargsyan said recently 32.5% of the country’s population lives below the poverty line. According to preliminary data of the 2011 census, number of population available in the country is 2,871,771 and that of permanent residents is 3,018,854 people. –0--
