YEREVAN, September 2. /ARKA/. The Yerevan State University (YSU) has raised tuition fees from 70,000 drams to 130,000 drams depending on departments, the acting rector Gegham Gevorgyan told a news conference today, saying the decision was unanimously approved by the YSU's Academic Board.
He said the university received in early May, when due to the coronavirus pandemic, economic restrictions were the most strict, some 4,060 applications, and half of the applicants sought admission to the departments with the highest tuition fees.
According to the rector, the talk about increased tuition fees was initiated by the media, political forces and some parliament members after the university completed accepting applications.
"I agree that tuition fees are high for many students, but if applicants have chosen a certain specialty at this price, so it suits them, "he said.
Gevorgyan said that the increased tuition fees will apply only for freshmen, the fees for the rest of the students will remain the same. He stressed that due to the increase in tuition fees, the faculty's salaries will be increased by an average of 10%.
He also said the rise purses another goal- to attract new staff to the university. According to Gevorgyan, the salaries are still not enough for young, qualified specialists to support their families and many of them seek higher-paid jobs. -0-
