USAID provided over $1 billion to improve lives of Armenian people over 25 years

YEREVAN, October 12. /ARKA/. The USAID has provided over $1 billion to improve the lives of the Armenian people, supporting their efforts to strengthen democratic, economic, and social governance since 1992, when USAID partnered with the government of Armenia, US Ambassador Richard Mills said at a reception Thursday marking the 25th anniversary of the organization's inception in Armenia.

He said as the first person responsible for Armenia in the US State Department, he saw from afar what difficulties faced the Armenian population in those dark years when the first USAID representatives arrived here. He added that today he sees progress in the development of the economy, democratic institutions, media and the formation of civil society. Mills noted that 25 years later Armenia itself is the engine of its progress.

"Today we are looking to the future: USAID is ready to be near to Armenia and help it, as it was planned initially," the ambassador said.

In turn, the head of the Armenian Office of USAID Deborah Grisher said that the office will receive $17 million in 2018 for the implementation of various programs in Armenia.

"These resources will be directed to the development of tourism, energy, to support civil society and free media and the development of local government," she said. She stressed that Armenia is moving in small but confident steps towards overcoming corruption.

"The US Ambassador to Armenia and I are getting ready to meet with Prime Minister Karen Karapetyan and discuss the government's plans to fight corruption. The US is ready to support Armenia in this matter," she said. -0-
