YEREVAN, March 12 / ARKA /. After losing a friendly game to Russia 0-2 on March 5 Armenia’s national soccer team has drooped 11 notches in FIFA ranking, released today, to the 41st position.
The top five teams in the standings are Spain, Germany, Argentina, Portugal and Colombia. Spain has dominated the FIFA World Rankings since it won the World Cup in 2010, maintaining its spot at the top every month except August 2011, when the Netherlands temporarily claimed the top slot.
The rankings were introduced in December 1992. Seven teams Argentina, Brazil, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Spain, have held the top position, of which Brazil have spent longest ranked first.
A points system is used, with points being awarded based on the results of all FIFA-recognised full international matches.
Under the existing system, rankings are based on a team's performance over the last four years, with more recent results and more significant matches being more heavily weighted to help reflect the current competitive state of a team. -0-
