YEREVAN, March 22. /ARKA/. Armenian chess grandmaster Levon Aronian said it was only through  luck that he had broken resistance of Azerbaijan’s Teimour Radjabov in the 6th round of the Candidates Tournament in London.

“I thought I had a decent position out of the opening and lots of time on my clock, so I thought I should pose some problems for Teimour,” the official  website of the tournament quoted Aronian. According to the source, Aronian seemed to get an advantage after White’s pawn push 24.g5.

Aronian added with a weakened king position Radjabov had to be careful, and he was for a long time. Aronian also said till the very last moment Radjabov was defending very well.

The Armenian grandmaster defeated the Azerbaijani after the latter’s rude mistake.

After six rounds Carlsen and Aronian have 4.5 points (or “plus three” in chess slang), which is 1.5 point more than Svidler and Kramnik. Grischuk and Radjabov have 2.5 points and Ivanchuk and Gelfand 2. Friday is a rest day. Saturday, March 23rd at 14:00 GMT the seventh round will be played: Carlsen-Radjabov, Aronian-Grischuk, Gelfand-Kramnik and Ivanchuk-Svidler.

Aronian previously defeated Ivanchuk and Gelfand and drew three games (with Kramnik, Carlsen and Svidler).

The tournament will be over on April 1.

The tournament winner will play with world champion Vishy Anan.

Levon Aronian was World Chess champion in 2005. He is a winner of three Olympiads (2006, 2008, 2012), super tournaments in Linares, Wijk aan Zee. He was a member of the gold-medal winning Armenian team at the World Team Chess Championship in 2011. -0-
