YEREVAN, September 20, /ARKA/. Armenia’s capital Yerevan has been put forward as potential host cities for the 2020 UEFA European Championship, it has been revealed. All final decisions have to be made by 25 April 2014, while UEFA says it will decide on 25 September which cities will get which games.
In December 2012 at a meeting in Lausanne the UEFA Executive Committee, chaired by UEFA President Michel Platini decided to hold in 2020 the "Euro for Europe" instead of the tournament in one or two countries. In January 2013th UEFA Executive Committee decided that the final matches will be held in 13 cities. The deadline for applications to host matches of UEFA EURO-2020 expired on Thursday.
UEFA president Michel Platini said: "We are extremely proud to see the huge interest in the bidding process, with more than half of our member associations willing to host matches at UEFA Euro 2020.
Earlier, the president of the Football Federation of Armenia Ruben, Hayrapetyan said that Armenia wanted to submit a bid to host the matches of one group of the European Football Championship in 2020, and to this end in the next 5 years the Hazdan stadium will see a major reconstruction to ‘become one of the best in Europe.” Hrazdan stadium is the largest in Armenia and can accommodate about 55,000 people. -0-
