Armenian government to privatize isotope production center
YEREVAN, December 19. /ARKA/. An extraordinary session of the Armenian parliament allowed last Friday the privatization of the Isotope Production Center. According to Arman Sahakyan, the head of State Property Management Department, the Isotope Production Center will be included in the list of state-owned objects subject to privatization based on the proposal of the ministry of health of Armenia.

In his words, the Centre has been operating since 2013 as a framework for the production of radioisotopes and molecular diagnostics and serves as the first fully integrated component of the National Oncology Center.

"The decision on the privatization of the Center has been made because of the need to finance future activities of the modern medical center, for which no public funds are earmarked. The privatization of the facility will allow to attract investment, to conduct financial recovery of the system and further modernize and develop the sector", - Sahakyan said.

The Armenian Center of Excellence in the field of oncology, the cost of which is estimated at $12.4 million, will provide a variety of services in the field of ultra-modern and accurate diagnosis, treatment and control, and also will serve as a center of science, professional training, entrepreneurship and innovation.

The center is created on the basis of Armenia’s traditional potential in the field of nuclear physics, and will serve for the training and re-training of a new generation of medical and technical professionals.

The Armenian cancer treatment center is a joint program of the ministries of health and economy and the National Competitiveness Fund of Armenia. In 2010 November an agreement was signed with the Belgian company IBA Molecular to acquire a proton accelerator Cyclone 18/18, worth $5 million. The total cost of the program is $30 million.

The cyclotron radionuclide accelerator will be used for producing isotopes as part of the project worked out by Yerevan Institute of Physics, for early diagnosis and treatment of cancer. According to the health ministry, 30,000 people suffer from cancer and their number grows by 3 percent every year. Authorities say the cost of treatment at the center will be affordable and may be around $1000.

According to Armenian health ministry, about 600 Armenians with cancer are being treated abroad every year, but their real number is believed to be much higher.

According to statistics, every year 2,700 people become disabled in Armenia as a result of cancer, causing 75 million drams economic losses annually. -0-
