YEREVAN, February 21. / ARKA /. More than 100,000 Iranian tourists visited Armenia in 2013, Mekhak Apresyan, head of an Armenian economy ministry department in charge of tourism, said today.
Apresyan spoke to journalists after talks with an Iranian delegation, headed by Seyyed Muhammad Kazim Holdi- Nasab, a senior official from the Iranian organization of tourism and cultural heritage.
According to official figures, the record high number of Iranian tourists visiting Armenia was registered in 2008- 134,000 people. The drop in this number was caused largely by the devaluation of the Iranian national currency, the rial, in recent years because of Western-slapped sanctions on the Islamic republic.
According to Seyyed Muhammad Kazim Holdi- Nasab, in 2013 some 5,400 citizens of Armenia visited Iran as tourists.
"As you can see, the statistics indicate that Iranians are more frequent visitors to Armenia than vice versa. I think this discrepancy is due to lack of information about Armenia in Iran , which we are going to address," he said.
Summing up the negotiations, the parties noted that they discussed ways to develop tourism in both countries, to prepare a single regional tourism product and to present it in other countries. They also discussed organization of a series of exhibitions and festivals in both countries. -0-
