YEREVAN, January 31. /ARKA/. The draft law proposed by the Armenian healthcare ministry which implies prohibition of smoking in public places and big fines for offenders has aroused discord among the cabinet ministers, Zhoghovurd reports.
According to the media resource, the ministers gathered recently and discussed the matter. Many of them were apposed to the draft law. They said enforcement of the law may have adverse impacts on the economy.
First of all, the number of café, restaurant and club visitors may shrink because of the prohibition, and this will strike hard at these economic entities’ trade turnover and, as a result, tax revenue flow to the government budget will dwindle.
Besides, the ministers said that the initiative may affect tourism, since for many foreign tourists, especially from Russia, Armenia is attractive also for freedom to smoke in leisure places.
It would be better, they said, to allocate zones for smokers in public places. -0---
