YEREVAN, August 31. /ARKA/. Armenian and Russian officials have agreed on mutual recognition of driving licenses, Aram Araratyan, a press secretary for Armenian prime minister, said yesterday.
Earlier, on June 1 Russia enacted a law that bans foreign nationals with driving licenses issued by their home countries, from working as drivers in Russia. The law did not apply to citizens of Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and Belarus, the three other member states of the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) since the Russian language has the official legal status in these countries
The Russian language does not have such a status in Armenia. That meant that thousands of Armenian labor migrants in Russia were not able to work as drivers of trucks, taxis and other vehicles. Otherwise they would be fined 10,000 Russian rubles and their employers 50,000 rubles.
This controversial decision was reportedly objected by Armenian prime minister during a meeting of prime ministers of EEU member states earlier this month in Kazakhstan. As a result Armenia and Russia agreed to meet before August 20 to discuss the issue of mutual recognition of national or international driving permits issued in two countries. -0-
