Armenia intends to ban sale of sliced watermelons and melons

YEREVAN, June 30. /ARKA/. A set of amendments to the law on trade and services designed by Armenia’s Ministry of Economy calls for prohibiting sale of watermelons and melons sliced or cut into parts.

The ministry says the amendments are meant to protect public health. It says watermelons and melons are often sold sliced to demonstrate their level of ripeness, however, trace elements, including pathogens, which may cause various infectious diseases and cause food poisoning, may get inside the flesh.

Sliced watermelon and melon are considered perishable products and should be stored in the refrigerator. At the same time, it is not uncommon for these products to be sold at fairs right from the ground under the sun.

If the amendments are approved, sale of watermelon and melon in sliced form will entail a fine of 30 minimum wage for individuals and 100 minimum wages for legal entities. -0-
